Wood and Tile Flooring in Houston, TX

Over a Houston slab, the floor is decided before the first plank or tile goes down. Moisture testing and substrate prep are the job.

Flooring is the trade where Houston conditions do the most damage to a job that looked fine on install day. Almost every failure here traces back to the same two causes: moisture coming up through the slab, and the slab itself moving.

Both are manageable. Neither is optional to address.

What We Install

Engineered Wood

The practical choice for most Houston homes on slab. A dimensionally stable core handles slab moisture and seasonal humidity far better than solid wood, while the wear layer is real hardwood. Installed glued down or floating depending on the product and the substrate condition.

Solid Hardwood

Correct in the right situation, particularly on pier and beam homes with proper crawlspace ventilation, common in older South Houston and inner-loop neighborhoods. Over a slab it requires a vapor barrier and a subfloor system to be done properly, and we price that honestly instead of pretending the step does not exist.

Tile

Porcelain, ceramic and stone for floors, showers, backsplashes and commercial spaces. Large format tile has become the default request, and it carries a real flatness requirement that older slabs rarely meet without correction.

Slab Preparation

Grinding, patching and self-leveling compound to bring a substrate within tolerance before anything goes down. This is invisible work that decides whether the finished floor is flat, quiet and bonded, or whether it develops lippage and hollow spots within a year.

What Houston Does to Floors

  • Moisture through concrete

A slab releases vapor for a long time, and it also draws moisture from the ground beneath it. Manufacturers require moisture testing before installation, and installing without it voids the warranty on most products. It is a small cost against the price of replacing a failed floor.

  • Seasonal slab movement

Expansive clay soil swells and shrinks through the year. Rigid tile bonded directly to a moving slab eventually cracks in a line, which is why we install a crack isolation membrane rather than treating it as an optional upgrade.

  • Ambient humidity

Wood flooring must acclimate in the conditioned space before installation so it reaches equilibrium with the house. Planks installed straight off a truck gap in winter and buckle in summer. There is no way to shortcut this and no product that makes it unnecessary.

  • Water events

Floors are usually the first casualty of a supply line failure or a storm. When we replace a floor after water damage, the substrate is verified dry before installation, because sealing moisture under new flooring creates a much larger problem than the one you started with. Our plumbing crew handles the source when a pipe is responsible.

Part of a Larger Remodel

Flooring runs near the end of a project, after drywall and usually alongside painting, with trim and transitions closing it out. Sequencing it correctly protects the finished surface from the trades that follow. See the process page for how the whole schedule fits together, or kitchen and bathroom remodeling for room-specific work.

Frequently asked questions

Engineered wood is the safer choice over a slab in this climate, because solid hardwood reacts more strongly to the moisture that moves through concrete. Engineered planks use a dimensionally stable core that handles that exposure far better. Where a client wants solid wood over slab anyway, it requires a proper vapor barrier and a subfloor system, and we will price it honestly rather than skip the step.

Wood flooring has to acclimate to the conditioned space so it reaches equilibrium before it is fastened down, typically several days. Skipping acclimation in Houston humidity is the most common cause of gapping in winter and buckling in summer. If a bid does not mention acclimation time, that installer intends to deliver and install on the same day.

Yes. Concrete releases moisture vapor for a long time, and manufacturers require moisture testing before flooring goes down or the warranty is void. Testing is a small line item that prevents an expensive failure. It matters most on newer slabs, on ground-floor rooms and anywhere the house has a history of drainage problems at the foundation.

A crack that runs in a straight line through multiple tiles is usually the slab moving underneath, not a bad tile. Expansive clay soil across Houston shifts seasonally and transmits that movement straight through rigid tile. A crack isolation membrane between slab and tile is what interrupts it, and it is standard on our installations rather than an upgrade.

Almost always, and large format tile makes it non-negotiable. Big tiles need a flatter substrate than small ones because they cannot follow a curve, so any dip shows up as lippage between edges. Older Houston slabs frequently need self-leveling compound before installation, which we identify during the walkthrough rather than on install day.

Thinset and grout each need cure time before traffic, and rushing it breaks the bond you just paid for. Cure schedules stretch in humid conditions, so we plan the room to be out of service for a realistic window rather than an optimistic one. In a single-bathroom house, that window is worth planning around before demolition starts.

Ask What Is Under the Floor

When you compare flooring bids, ask each installer about moisture testing, leveling and crack isolation. The bids that skip those steps will always be cheaper on paper.
